Beware! Malware began attacking ATM
Fraud-based Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) in Europe increased rapidly; criminals are also increasingly sophisticated in using the method of attack. According to the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA), the number of fraud drastic increase of 149 percent in 2008, with total losses reaching 485.15 million euros in the year 2008.
Until now many criminals who are still using the old ways, for example with direct peering Personal Identification Number (PIN) through the victim’s shoulder as the villain in line behind the victim. On the other hand, there are criminals using sophisticated methods.
For the methods of modern scams, criminals typically use a small camera as a spy, forged engine and PIN. Even some criminals that use Bluetooth wireless technology to send card details and PIN to a laptop. During the year 2008 alone, the total incidence of fraud that occurred in Europe counted as many as 10,302 cases.
Meanwhile, the malware that infects ATM networks have also increased. In April 2009, various ATMs in Russia have been infected with malicious malware is not only able to collect card details, but also the PIN.
