How to Configure Linksys WRT54G as Internet Gateway

Linksys WRT54G is Broadband Router equipped with wireless b/g.  WRT54G is one of the Linksys Router Family. Linksys WRT54G can be used as a gateway server for your Internet connection, typically for “broadband internet access”. To configure this router is very easy. Here are the steps:

First we need to set up “IP WAN & LAN”:

  • Prepare and turn on your Linksys WRT54G router power.
  • Connect the data cable (UTP straight cable) into the LAN port of your computer / laptop.
  • Setting IP on your computer / laptop to DHCP so that it’s more easily.
  • Check IP, netmask and gateway that received by your computer.
  • Open your browser and enter the gateway IP on your computer before, it is http://192.168.1.1/ by router default.
  • Well, it would be appear a form for the password for accessing the router, the default user / pass: admin.
  • In his Internet Connection Type, please choose: DHCP or Static, this is depending your local ISP.
  • Then go to Network Setup settings, setting your own LAN, or leave it to default.

If you choose to disable DHCP then you need to enter IP, Netmask, Gateway and DNS manually for each client.

  • For the Time Zone you can select your local time watch.
  • And then click Save Settings.
  • Now up here, your computer is ready to use as Router Gateway for LAN Client to the internet.

Second setting is “WI-FI Configuration”:

Wi-Fi or Wireless Fidelity is a technology that using radio frequency so that the connection between router and Computer client established without cable.

  • Select Menu Wireless
  • Wireless network should be selected Mixed mode to support the type of wifi b and g
  • Change the SSID according to your will.

We recommend using the SSID Lowercase all, and replacing the spaces with underscores to prevent, some recipient’s wifi devices that do not support.

  • For Wireless Channel you can choose by the default, unless you place has other wifi / hotspot in range. Well, for this can be changed with unused channels.
  • Then select Save Settings.
  • Now up to here, Client which uses cables & WIFI already are connected to the internet.

To secure your WiFi connection, you should install the security on your wifi.
Type of security you can be a WEP or WPA. But for the more universal select only 64-bit WEP.

How to configure you’re WRT54G Wireless Security:

  • Choose the menu Wireless – Wireless Security.
  • Select the security mode = WEP
  • Select a default transmit key = 1
  • Select WEP Encryption = 64 bits with 10 digits hex
  • Enter the pass phrase and click generate, then be created for the 4 key access your wifi password, please use Key 1, (if you chose default transmit = 1).
  • And then Save Settings
  • Now your WiFi connection is now Secure (in the sense of having a password and encrypted).

That’s the basically Configuration, not too difficult isn’t?. This configuration is also suitable for all Linksys WRT54G Family.
